Perfect summers day

Long hot summer days
look but don't touch the whispers
hiding in the shade
a breath - just about clinging on...

...and I reach out
and I run my fingers through your soft, warm hair
as - fingers through confetti
and the shadows mark time 'neath the tall oak tree under which we sit
and I notice the fields of fire
exploding with the summer heat
flames of colour and texture!

...and then I get it
this is it!
This is the dream I can touch
this is all I want
you - you are all I want
so I can reach out and touch every part of it
this is what we are living for
this simplicity that nature brings
life as simple as you and me and this summer's day
a day we've earnt
a day we will remember for all time
this summer's day
this
perfect
summers day

Got That One Wrong Didn't I

Tall and slender
stood facing her van
her long hair
complete with blonde streaks
blowing in the gentle evening breeze
and casually dressed - possibly a uniform.
Tank filled
she returned the nozzle to the pump
reapplied the petrol filler cap
and turned her head to the shop...

...it was a bloke
a skinny bloke
with a terrible completion
and a hole in his shirt
...and with a beard!

Got that one wrong didn't I!

Toothbrushes

I open the bathroom cabinet
the one with the mirror on the front - you know
the one you look at yourself in and think how gorgeous you look!
Inside I see six toothbrushes
standing in a pot
plus one electric toothbrush propped up at the back
and three tubes of toothpaste at varying stages of emptiness
there is even two identical pink toothbrushes in the mix - someone's going to be in for a bit of mouth bacteria cross-contamination if they're not careful!
Then I think
and I ponder...

...why are there seven toothbrushes in there when there are only three people living here?

The Mobile Phone - Why!

Who are we talking to - who is it that we have our mobile phones glued to our ears for
this above everything else
regardless of what we are doing - or at least trying to do
at this particular time
at this particular moment in time
after 4.3 billion years of evolution
this moment
whilst we're filling up our cars at the petrol station
queuing for a takeaway
wandering 'round supermarkets
searching for dishwasher tablets in the wrong aisle
because we aren't concentrating
because we're talking on our mobiles
discussing important things like
 "you alright?"
or
"yeah I did have bangin' head this morning!"
with people you've only just left
"but you know I love you"
or more likely
"what was it you said we needed from the garage?"
Who is it we must speak to - now!
"The blue ones or the white ones?"
or that top work of fiction
"yeah I am on my way"
who is it we are talking to that is more important than what we are trying to do at this moment in time?
After 4.3 billion years
we can't just finish the task we are undertaking
that thing we are trying to do now
that thing we aren't doing too well
because we're talking on our mobiles
spilling petrol
forgetting our takeaway order
or being in the wrong aisle
because we must talk on our mobiles right at this very moment!

 ...WHY?!

And then there's me

A gathering
of those who like trains - steam trains to be precise
we're all here - lifes 'strange' ones
the unusual types
the long haired bushy beard types
the slightly autistic types - muttering to themselves as they search for a seat
the railway 'anoraks'
the spotters
the book collectors - the ones who come for the second-hand book stalls
the how does it all work 'geeks'
the lineside wavers
those over ladend with camera equipment
the older types - they used to go to school on one of these
the cap wearers - resplendent with logos from many a long gone railway company
the rivet counters - pedantic ones who like things just so
and will complain if it isn't
the wives who've been dragged along by their husbands
the lineside photographers - stood in their favourite spot
tripods and cameras ready
timetables in hand
a flask of coffee and plenty of sandwiches
and a comfy stool to wait on for the next opportunity
the videoers - video cameras stuck on tripods
lots of clips taken which they look forward to editing together later
those who prefer the end of their favourite platform
cameras ready
timetables memorized
those who like to hang out of windows
complete with goggles to keep the 'smuts' out of their eyes
maybe recording the sounds of the 'clickety clack'
and the 'toot toot' of the whistle
the studiers of timetables
noting down late starts and early arrivals
the regulars
those who know - know the drivers
know everyone on the train
and who know all the volunteers on every station
or the ones who simply choose a station and sit with a coffee, shooting the breeze

...and then there's me!
