War Poem

(A parody of Who's for the Game? by Jessie Pope)

Who’s for the game - the biggest game that’s played?
...the game of war is rolling into town!
Who’ll worry and be scared; when the game of war’s declared,
will you stand or are you going to back-down?

Who’ll toe the line and stand and do his duty?
Who’ll face the foe and do it with a smile?
Who is dead and who is dying; was your country simply lying
"It’s your duty" - is it really worth your while?

Who can hear the scream of fallen comrades?
...and who has had the thought he might be next?
The noise of those grenades; with their bloody serenades
Is this really what 'the old' country expects?

No-man ever said that the game of war was fair
And no-man ever said that it was right!
With my body racked with pain; washed in endless mud and rain
I’m not a solider and I do not want to fight!
