Getting Old

Getting old  -  'Accomodation'
Finding you current accomodation isn't appropriate
the garden's too big to manage
you can't do the stairs
the bathroom is upstairs and inappropriate
you'd have to modify your house to be able to stay there
you'd have to get a gardener
maybe you are unable to modify your current house
you have to consider moving
you have to move
you have to downsize
what to get rid of
maybe you have to move to sheltered accomodation
move away from friends and life-long connections!
even moving into a home

Getting old - 'Food'
The practicalities
Food in jars
tins
boxes
packets - are you able to open them
are they too heavy to lift
can you get them down from cupboards and shelves
is your kitchen suitable anymore for you to cook in
are you safe in the kitchen now
where is your food going to come from
if you're not able to buy it yourself
not wanting to impose on neighbours
not having a clue about the internet
not able to order food online
what options do you have

Getting old - 'Eating'.
what are you going to eat
can you cook it or are you going to eat 'ready made food
sandwiches
cold pies and pasties
the quality of your diet will decrease
you might need help to cook
you won't be able to cook like you used to
you'll be cooking what you can
not cooking what you want
you might not feel like eating anyay
all the equipment you now need
having to use specially adapted knives and forks to eat with
having to use special plates with enlarged edges to keep your food on the plate
unable to eat without assistance
dropping more food on the floor than you ate
not really feeling hungry
can't be bothered

Getting old - 'Tablets'
Chances are you'll have an illness
Illness means tablets
lots of tablets
having to order lots of tablets
having to reorder lots of tablets
remembering to order enough of the right tablets
having a system to manage all your tablets
remembering to take all of your tablets
remembering to take the tablets at the right time
remembering which tablets you have taken
and suffering with the side effects from all those tablets.

Getting old - 'Sleep'.
Always feeling sleepy
falling asleep
always falling asleep
falling asleep in your chair
falling asleep in the doctor's waiting room
falling asleep on the bus
falling asleep at the dinner table
falling asleep anywhere - everywhere
yet not able to sleep through the night.

Getting old - 'The memory'.
Simply loosing your train of thought
loosing it often
loosing your memory
loosing your memory occasionally
loosing your memory mid-sentence
loosing your memory often
not recognising people
not recognising family members
not able to look after yourself

Getting old - 'Illness'.
Suffering falls
bones break and limbs are injured so easily
becoming unwell
picking up everything that's going around
being suseptible to illness
not wanting to bother the doctor
having to have home help
having to have strangers come and get you out of bed in the morning -
then
having strangers come and get you ready for bed
being unwell with things you previously shook off
the slightest thing knocking you back
becoming mentally unwell
becoming forgetful
becoming very forgetful
becoming demented
not knowing anyone
drifting away

Getting old - 'Loss'.
Letting go
having to let go
handing in your driving licence
letting go of the car
loosing items
remembering where you put things
loosing your independence
loosing close friends
loosing family members
loosing a life partner...

loosing your mind
loosing the world
and finally
...the world loosing you.

Above Our Heads

aeroplanes pass silently on high
the police helicopters hovers
and fills the air with noise
Above our heads air-coridors are full

the sun paints in the sky
clouds add some contrast
and the stars come out to highlight the canvas
Above our heads the universe waits

a crow carries twigs in its beak
a pair of pigeons on telegraph wires sit and chat together about the day
Above our heads nature is busy

chimney pots stand in rows
TV aerials protrude on stalks
and the signals they receive entertain us.
Above our heads invisible forces are at work

cables provide power to our homes
streetlights light our way
and speed cameras keep us under the speed limit.
Above our heads electricity provides and takes away

black storm clouds appear
the wind gathers a pace
and a distant rumble of thunder is heard.
Above our heads nature can be fierce

...just some of the many things that go on
above our heads
(Look up sometime!)

Bloody Brilliant Night

rain falls in the city but still the Saturday night congregation start to convene
it's afternoon yet the activities have already begun
in vast pubs
cathedrals of Saturday night worship
doorways sport bouncers
"Gods doormen"
men in black
'ear-pieces' in
connected to a higher force
doors open only to those who believe
...women in short skirts
balancing on high heals
hair and makeup done for the occasion  - 'mobiles' in hand
try to get past the bouncers discerning eye
Lads line-up to try their hand
to be at one with their doorman
to be allowed to worship their gods
by the bottle
by the pint
to find a mate
to find a like minded soul
a spiritual bond - or just a one night stand
and maybe get lucky!

with the pouring rain
the congregation still pours into the city
as the afternoon becomes early evening
the work on creating
"that bloody brilliant night"
...intensifies!

(Haiku)

One more bus needed
to make the old adage come
to pass. There it is!

If I Could

If I could
if-I-could-only
well,
would I?
If I could - would I?
Would it be wise to?
I mean,
It would be nice to be able to but
...well I'm not really sure!
It would be wonderful!
Imagine!
If I could only...
I don't even know if I can still do it
have I got it in me?
Sometimes
when - when I think I'd like to
when I get all excited about it
I have to I rein myself in
give myself a good talking to - "no!"
don't be silly
it's only a fantasy
I'd certainly be in a better place
if I could
if I could that is
if I could do it
if I did it
but...

No!
I mustn't

You're Not Hungry!

You're not hungry you just think you are.
You're not hungry you're just bored.
You're not hungry you just have a sandwich sat in front of you talking to you.
You're not hungry, you must wait until tea time,
OK lunchtime,
OK breakfast!
You're not hungry, it's just a phase you're going through.
You're not hungry you just have fond memories of your lunch.
You're not hungry it's just trapped wind.
You're not hungry you just had a day dream about food.
You're not hungry it's just your stomach is telling fibs.
You're not hungry it's just your stomach in cahoots with the shop you're in right now - it's on 25% commission!
You're not hungry you just want this shift to end and you think eating something will make that happen.
You're not hungry - so put that packet of 'Biscuits' down!
You're not hungry, you've eaten enough!

You're not hungry!
