My Very Last Mistake

Once I was a young boy -
life was gonna pass this young boy by.
Then I was a young man
a young man with a sparkle in his eye.
The world around me owed me a good living
The world around was mine alone to take
But I soon discovered I wasn’t due a penny
And that had been my very first mistake.

When I was a grown man -
life turned round and gave me a black-eye
Then life when I became a man told me -
that it was gonna make that sparkle die.
The world around me owed me a good living
The world around was mine alone to take
But I soon discovered I wasn’t due a penny
And that had been my very first mistake.

Then I was an old man -
life had passed and so my time was due
This old man deep in contemplation
Knew that there was nothing he could do
He thought the world around owed him a living
He thought the world around was his to take
But he soon discovered he wasn’t due a penny
And that had been his very first mistake.

If I had it all again -
life would make this young boy fly.
Once I was a young man
I’d live it with a sparkle in my eye
I thought the world around owed me a living
I thought the world around was mine to take
But I soon discovered I wasn’t due a penny
And that had been my very last mistake.
