moving house - same street different end

Looks like they're off - at last,
the ones with all the cars!
Their noisy children
with late night music,
The hired van is there,
all their stuff - I wonder where they're going?
Him, loading up.
Her, occupying the children - keeping them quiet,
more quite than usual!
We finally get to see that enormous TV,
the one which we heard every evening since they arrived.
At least they're not arguing in the street - yet!
And they're off - to pastures new,
not sure where.
We didn't speak that much,
but they were a nice enough family.

...oh, the van's stopped,
up the street,
and they're getting out...

Tea at The Beach

Some pour it,
chilled from a supermarket fridge,
sparkling from a bottle.
Some soar high on the breeze with a keen eye,
then dive for it.
Some nip to the high street and buy it.
Some fish for it
or just in case,
bring it!
Ready to go
in cool-boxes,
barbeques smoking,
hot and ready to cook.

...and some cook themselves,
20 minutes each side
at 180⁰ centigrade,
laying in a towel,
red and ready for Monday,
with explanations why,
to all at the office!

Paris With You

(I must say thank you to James Fenton for his poem "In Paris with you" for the inspiration for this piece)

Paris is; they say the city of love,
and I love that city more than any above.
I know that through lifes wringer; I have been
and that the very bottom; I have seen.
But when love grew,
and you said "I do"
I must go to Paris; Paris with you.

We could stroll its boulevards let's see all it's sights,
visit the 'Sacre Coeur'; up all those flights.
At the top we'd gaze upon the city and stare,
just drink it all in without a care.
But what a drag,
come; light me a fag!
for I am in Paris; Paris with you.

Let's order 'service de chambre', cover the bed sheets with crumbs.
Much better than the 'metro'
and twiddling our thumbs.
We could express our love in a thousand ways,
then call down for 'service'
to take all the trays.
Paris is our view,
we're here; us two
here in Paris; Paris with you.

To hell with the 'Louvre' and all its queues,
and old 'Notre Dame' giving me the blues.
The 'Latin Quarter' although vibrant and gaye,
are going to have to wait',
I've got something to say.
Who could want more,
quick; fasten the door!

For I love Paris; Paris with you!

Nothing

Nothing has troubled philosophers more over time than the definition of "nothing", other than maybe a definition of "time" itself!
Someone once said that "time is an elusion".
We have a misguided idea that nothing means a vacuum.
A vacuum is an absence of everything,
a space without anything.
a space with nothing in it,
perhaps just space itself.
Unfortunately that statement can be pulled apart by science.
A space that may seem empty,
isn't.
What about the many fluctuating energy fields,
and virtual particles?
No - I don't understand that either!
I can't imagine somewhere with nothing in it,
the absence of everthing,
a state where nothing exists,
it's hard to get your head 'round!
But,
can "nothing" be thought of as existing
or just as the absence of something,
as a concept
but not as a physical thing -  maybe?
What if "nothing" is just another "something"
isn't "nothing" proof of an existence in itself?
Isn't "nothing" - just another "something
like the vacuum is "something",
it exists,
it is a vacuum - empty, albeit not completely empty!
Even the concept of "nothing" implies there's "something" - doesn't it?
So can there ever be "nothing"
or do we have to say it's an absence of absence
still doesn't that make it "something"
it doesn't make sense,
does it!

In the absence of absence
of a specific event say,
we can assume if it did not occur
or,  if the event was not missing
it must have happened,
mustn't it?
And when nothing is missing
there's got to be a "something" - hasn't there?
so metaphorically
I suggest that an object seemingly empty - a cup or a bottle
still holds "something" - that being "nothing"
anyway
a seemingly empty cup or bottle is never empty - on earth it is full of air.

Can you hear silence?
Absolute silence is impossible
So no! - but as silence is the absence of sound
and the brain perceives silence in a way that is similar to how it perceives sound,
then, yes!
But does it exist then?
Yes, silence exists,
that is, what we humans call silence,
ie, a very quiet state,
but a complete absence of sound?
Complete silence is a myth!

Tearing all that apart,
there is nothing that makes something what it is
There's nothing that makes something intrinsically exist.
"form is empty' and 'emptiness is form",
the Buddhists say...

In the "time" it has taken you to read this,
you have learnt

..."Nothing"

Me - Will I ever get know

I see someone reflected
in shop windows - but although
others recognise him,
this someone I don't know.

I've never met him in the town
whilst out shopping - but although
others say they've met him,
it's not a soul I know.

I think I've heard his voice, out
and roundabout - but although
others recognise it,
it's not a voice I know.

I think he has a cheery face
happy with a smile - but although
others recognise it,
it's not a face I know.

I think he might be following me
everwhere I go - but although
others say he's perfectly safe,
how am I know?

Who can he be, what does he do
allusive as he is - for although
others say they know him, but...

will I ever get to know?

Old Wardour Castle

We sit
and we listen
and we leave the noise of the 21st century behind us
and a peaceful calm settles.
Bird calls and the flap of wings.
A dog panting heavily in the heat of a July day
lapping cooling water from a bowl
its metal name tag rings on the side of the bowl.
A distant passing aeroplane buzzes on its way to somewhere.
Fish break the surface of the lake.
A car door slams shut
and its engine.starts.
A fly passes by on the gentle breeze
which rustles the leaves of the old oak tree
under which we sit
all is disturbed by a very distant commotion
from a battle
here
from long time ago.
Footsteps on the gravel path
the distant feet of men
with the sound of gunshot
loud explosions
tumbling masonry
and the screaming of attacking soldiers.

...that's all!
Nothing more.
